Perlite comes from volcanic rock of silica family. Moisten it with water before use to avoid breathing its dust.
Its main characteristics are:

water retention ventilation it doesn't compress itself small particle size (1 to 3 mm) chemically neutral For orchids, perlite can be used to improve the draining in the pot and to avoid the compost to pack too much with time.
